Unity in the Pioneer Valley History
History and Organization
Unity in the Pioneer Valley (UPV) was the vision of Carol Kelshaw, who pioneered UPV while in training and was ordained during her tenure here. Rev. Carol and the other founders of Unity in the Pioneer Valley (UPV) requested permission to establish a new Unity Center in December 2002. The first service was held in Shelburne Falls a few months later in 2003. UPV was formally incorporated in 2006.
UPV's administrative structure has always been organized according to a team-based model. Rev. Carol's sabbatical in 2009 catalyzed a further evolution of this model informed by the book, Me to We: A Pastor's Discovery of the Power of Partnership by Alan Nelson. It was at this time that we adopted our current logo and our slogan, "Many Hands, One Heart."
Rev. Carol retired at the end of 2012. Between May 2013 and October 2014, Rev. Bill Heller served as temporary minister. Dan Landis assumed his position as our Spiritual Leader in November 2014.
UPV is the only Unity Center serving Western Massachusetts.
