Valley Center Community of Christ History
October 26, 2011
Valley Center Community of Christ Church, on the corner of Shephard and Galbraith Line roads, hosted its 100th anniversary in August. The 76-member congregation and guests included descendants of the founding families – Crist, Isles, McLane, Muir, and Nicholson.
Valley Center Branch in Eastern Michigan District was organized Feb. 14, 1908 by Elder Wm. Grice and Elder John Grant in the home of Thomas Muir.
The first officers of the Valley Center Church were Harold Muir, president, and Thomas Muir, teacher. Harold served as pastor for 40 years. Thomas R. Isles has been pastor since Sept. 1947.
The original branch consisted of 15 to 18 members. The present membership is 80.
The meetings were held in the Muir home for a short time, until a vacant house on the Wm. Isles Lot was donated by Thomas Muir and converted to a church.
The congregation outgrew the church in a few years, about the time the vacant Methodist Church Valley Center came up for sale. Each family donated $100 towards the purchase.
The same building is used today, but since that time a vestibule has been added, the basement dug out mostly by hand and horses, and a kitchen and dining room added. In 1952 and 1953 stained glass windows replaced the old windows and a baptismal fount has been added under the rostrum.

We need passion
We need passion in our faith! Instead of praying, 'If I should die before I wake', we should pray, 'Lord wake me up before I die!'
