Who we are

The Anglican Parish Of New Bandon was formed in 1831.

In the year 1841 a church was built in Clifton. It was located where Christ Church Cemetery is today. The Church and cemetery were consecrated on August 14th 1843.

In the late 1880s it was decided to build a larger church so, on August 15th 1888, a cornerstone was laid for the Christ Church we have today. It stood for over a hundred years close to the south side of highway 11. In the year 2001, it was moved back from the road about eighty feet and placed on a new foundation. A new addition, sixteen by twenty feet, was added and finished in 2004. It was called the Memorial Room and was dedicated by Bishop Miller in 2005. It provides much needed space for the choir and clergy to robe and assemble, for a bride and her attendants to enter the church, and for the family of a deceased person to assemble before the funeral among other uses.

St Alban's Church was started in 1889 but, like the others, took a few years to build. It was also close to Route 11, but on the north side. St Alban's was part of the Parish of Bathurst until it joined the Parish of New Bandon around 1915. In 1970, St Alban's had to be moved due to changes at Miller Brook Bridge and to the road. An addition, now used for meetings, for overflow congregations, and for coffee hours after church, and a new basement, used for Sunday School and various social occasions, were added.

Canobie Union Church was started in 1896 and finished in 1900. It was built on land on the corner of Highway 340 and the Middle Canobie Road, deeded to members of the community by Richard and Alice Ellis, and intended for use
by the Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian churches. In 1958, the church was renamed Trinity Union. In later years,
the Anglicans were the sole users of the church and kept it in repair. In 2006, the Corporation of the Anglican Parish Of New Bandon voted at its Annual Meeting to cease using the church, and the Canobie Community Club, which had been formed in the 1930s, undertook to see to the disposition of the church and the memorials therein. The church was provisionally deconsecrated by Bishop Claude Miller on September 4th 2006.

Christ Church Hall was started in 1955 and took a few years to complete. It was located on the south side of Route 11 in Clifton. Later, it also required moving back to accommodate Route 11 and to provide increased parking space. In 2002 more land was given to move the hall southward and a new foundation was built. Over the years two additions were added to the 1955 construction. The building is used for suppers for several hundred people several times a year, for receptions and other sizeable events.

The Parish has accomplished much in the last ten years through working together to modernize and maintain its
buildings. There is a need for the Parish to continue to see itself as one unit rather than 'Christ Church' or 'St Alban's,' and to continue to work for the good of the whole. Although it continues to be important to maintain buildings it is also necessary to see the church as more than this, in terms of a wider outreach to the community in which it finds itself and to the church's mission in the world.
