Who we are
Ascension Lutheran Church is a community where friends are found, tears are shed, joy abounds, and serving others is a way of life. We value vibrant worship, imaginative ministries with children and youth, and nurturing ministries with our elders. We seek to follow the Jesus Way of radical compassion for all people. We expect the Spirit to transform us and support all people who are open to that ongoing transformation in their lives.
We invite you to join us as we strive to follow Jesus in the ways we love and live, no matter what your race, national origin, age, gender, physical ability, political perspective, personal history, marital status, sexual orientation, or economic status may be. Most of all, if you're not perfect and long to be assured of God's love and forgiveness, you will be right at home with us.

Ascension Lutheran Church History
Ascension Evangelical Lutheran Church began in 1941, when a small group of people met in a home on York Road. They gathered regularly for worship and mission planning, and they grew. They grew in size. They grew in mission. They grew in faith.
The congregation formally organized on May 14, 1942. It was Ascension Day - the feast that commemorates Jesus' ascension to heaven. From its humble beginnings, Ascension had extraordinary faith and vision. In July of 1949, they began construction on the present sanctuary which was dedicated on June 4, 1950. In June of 1959, an education wing and a nursery school were added to serve the community. Later, a narthex, columbarium and chapel were added.
We have experienced many renovations and expansions, benefitted from outstanding preachers and caring ministers, engaged in various mission partnerships, and demonstrated community commitment. All of these experiences have shaped our mission: Invite in Love. Grow in Faith. Serve Christ Everywhere.
Once-new endeavors we have tried over the years have now become hallmarks of Ascension: Partnerships with Lutheran Campus Ministry, Augsburg Lutheran Home, Assistance Center of Towson Churches (ACTC), and Fe y Esperanza Lutheran Church in Nicaragua; Youth Group for teens focusing on faith, family and serving others; Holy Thursday worship service and luncheon for our members in their 80's and 90's; Commitment to educating our youth and adults alike; Music programs that include four choirs - Cherub Choir, Junior Choir, Senior Choir, and Handbell Choir.
In 2017, we celebrate our 75th anniversary. We will continue to seek new ways to reach out in love and service to both our local and world communities. We invite you to join us.
