Ashbourne Road Methodist Church History
History of Derby Chinese Church
In 2000, a retired minister who had worked in the Far East and spoke Mandarin established a Chinese fellowship at the Queen’s Hall Methodist Mission in Derby. The first five years saw rapid growth, but sadly the minister died, and there followed a sharp decline.
With the assistance of grants from the British and Hong Kong Methodist Churches, the Circuit was able to seek an ethnic Chinese minister, and Revd Kok Kong Yap has been stationed full-time in the Circuit since 1st September 2009. During this time, the Chinese Fellowship has grown in number, and in confidence. Around 50-80 adults plus 20-30 children meet weekly for worship.
The Chinese Church do not have their own building. After Queen’s Hall closed in 2012, they moved first to the Central United Reformed Church. Since October 2015 they are meeting at Ashbourne Road Methodist/United Reformed Church.
As well as Sunday worship, the Chinese Church runs various fellowship groups including a women’s fellowship, a young adults’ fellowship, a student fellowship, a Bible study group, and choirs.
Revd Yap also provides chaplaincy to the Chinese students at the University of Derby.
