Calvary Chapel Sun City History
1996
Terry Gray planted Calvary Chapel Sun City in October 1996 and has been serving as the Senior Pastor to present. He is also the featured speaker on the Summons Radio program heard daily in the El Paso/Las Cruces area on the KELP Christian Radio Station. Terry received ministerial training at Calvary of Albuquerque’s School of Ministry and the Shepherd’s School. He also received training at Dallas Theological Seminary.
October 1996
Terry and Kim Gray arrived in El Paso, Texas on October 26, 1996, after much prayer and seeking God’s direction in their ministry. Terry worked as an electrical engineer while getting the church started. The photo on the right was taken in December 2018. Dylan (age 18), Connor (age 19) and Lindsay (age 20).
November 1996
They began a Bible study on the Westside of El Paso with a small but dedicated group of believers. This photo was taken on the first official Bible Study meeting on Wednesday nights 11/6/96.
March 1997
On March 23, 1997, our first Sunday morning service was held at the Westside YMCA. Our body has continued to grow both in numbers and in spiritual maturity since its inception.
November 1997
Terry has studied under his Pastor from Calvary of Albuquerque, Skip Heitzig. Terry was ordained as a Pastor on November 16, 1997, at a special service held at the YMCA.
March 1998
In March 1998, CC Sun City moved to a warehouse/showroom facility located at Doniphan Park Circle. We spent five years at that location growing into two Sunday morning services, a Wednesday night service and a Tuesday night Spanish service.
January 2002
On January 7, 2002, the Summons Radio program featuring Terry Gray as the speaker began airing on KELP radio, Monday through Friday, 5:30 – 6:00 pm. Summons also airs in Belize on the Christian Lighthouse radio program.
January 2003
In January 2003, CC Sun City purchased the property located at 960 West Borderland Road. It was hoped that the multiple existing buildings on site could be remodeled easily into a new sanctuary, a children’s ministry facility and offices.
2003
The Remodeling effort did not go well. The church ended up meeting on site for four years in a tent. The fellowship endured all kinds of weather hazards and bug hazards for four years. Incredibly we not only stayed together as a church but actually grew stronger in number, resources and spiritual maturity. The “tent years” will always hold a special place in our heart.
November 2006
In November of 2006 CC Sun City closed on a loan with the Bank of the West for construction of a new church sanctuary. The new steel building would provide 12,000 Sq. Feet allowing for a sanctuary that seats 650 and classrooms for children.
November 2006 - July 2007
Construction, ponding, paving, and landscaping took place between November 2006 and July 2007.
August 2007
August 12, 2007, was our first Sunday morning service in the new sanctuary.
October 2007
We held our building dedication service on Friday, October 5, 2007. Pastors Jim Suttle, Pancho Juarez, and Skip Heitzig were with us for the event. The Christian band, “The Kry,” was also present to lead in praise and worship. Praise God for all that He has done!
April 2011
After steady growth the church added a 2nd service in April of 2011. We praise God and give Him all glory!
December 2011
The church began it’s annual Christmas outreach in December 2011 reaching out to less fortunate families in Anthony, New Mexico. 65 families and 175 children were blessed with food, toys, hoodies, and shoes at the most recent event (Dec 18, pictured here). The gospel message is preached to all members of the family.
July 2012
Daniel Rodriguez was ordained as a Pastor at Calvary Chapel Sun City in July 2012. He serves faithfully as our Worship Pastor and Youth Pastor, and fills in regular for Pastor Terry in the pulpit.
June 2014
In June of 2014 Calvary Chapel Sun City ministered to close to 300 kids at Vacation Bible School. This has consistently been one of the biggest outreaches of the church for the year requiring over 100 volunteers and many hours of creative effort.
June 2015
In June 2015 the youth group lead by Pastor Daniel Rodriguez served on a Missions trip to El Salvador where many lives were changed. The church has visited many countries on missions trips including: Mexico, Guatemala, Hungary, Belize. We also help on many domestic missions opportunities and have always dedicated significant financial resources to missions worldwide.
August 2016
In August 2016 Kim Gray established Flourish ministry, a women’s ministry at Calvary Chapel Sun City. Women meet weekly to study the Bible together, pray for one another and enjoy fellowship together. The annual Spring Women’s retreat in Santa Fe New Mexico attracts over a hundred women each year.
March 2017
Calvary Chapel Sun City celebrated it’s 20th anniversary as a church in March 2017. We held a special service with testimonies, presentations and a time of fellowship to commemorate the milestone. Special well wishes were given us by Pastors Skip Heitzig, Pancho Juarez, Jim Suttle and David Maestas.
January 2019
Calvary Chapel’s vision for the future includes additional buildings to accommodate the growth of the church.
