Who we are
A vibrant faith community grounded in history and open to the future. We are inclusive, caring, active and engaged in proclaiming the good news of Christ to all God’s people.
Whether you are new to our community or just visiting, we welcome you to find rest and spiritual nourishment at Christ Church. We are a vibrant faith community grounded in history and open to the future. At Christ Church we are inclusive, caring, active and engaged in proclaiming the Good News of Christ to all God’s people.
Christ Church has stood at the heart of St. Michaels for over 350 years offering leadership, guidance and sacred space to an ever-changing town and community. Originally established in 1672 as a mission of the Church of England, we became part of the new Episcopal Church at its creation in 1789. Of course, we have changed over time. Our current beautiful edifice, built in 1878, was completely renovated and restored in 1989 and our new parish house facility was completed and dedicated in 2005. Both of these structures serve as a means to invite and welcome others to join us in celebrating and praising God.
We at Christ Church are a highly diverse group; some of us veterans, some quite new, and many of us are in between. Year-rounders, weekenders, retirees, young families, and life-long residents, each of us belongs to the community of Christ Church. On any given Sunday, approximately 100 people come to worship at Christ Church. Active parishioners number more than 400, with many coming from Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York.
Christ Church is one of 38 parishes that constitute the Episcopal Diocese of Easton, part of the Episcopal Church of the USA and a member of the 85 million member worldwide Anglican Communion.
Through worshiping God, we at Christ Church feel called to seek and to serve Christ in all persons and to strive for justice and peace among all people in our community, the nation, and the world.

Leader Bio:
The Reverend Steven E. Mosher officially began as our Rector on February 18, 2018. Fr. Steve was formerly resident in the Diocese of East Tennessee, where he had served since 2009 as rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Maryville. Previously, Fr. Steve served as Associate Rector at the Church of the Nativity in Huntsville, Alabama where he began his ordained career in 2004.
His prior career was in the business world, where he had worked as a manager in the information technology field, and as an IT recruiter in the Atlanta area. In 2001, he left corporate life, and with his wife and my then young sons relocated from Atlanta to Sewanee, Tennessee where he attended seminary. While seemingly a contrast in vocation, he found his prior career experiences working with all sorts of people and expectations to be invaluable in his career as a priest.

Christ Church - St. Michael's Parish History
Christ Church – St. Michael’s Parish was founded in 1672 on the banks of what was then known as “Shipping Creek,” as one of the Chesapeake Bay area’s original “water churches” for the Church of England. The English crown levied taxes on the colony payable on the feast day of St. Michael, September 29, and the river and eventually the settlement which grew up around its harbor—a thriving center for shipbuilding and shipping of local commodities, notably furs, timber and tobacco—became known as St. Michaels.
As settlement in the area spread out, many parishioners lived some miles from St. Michaels so that Chapels of Ease were established during the 18th and 19th centuries. Four chapels, of which we have records, were built and administered by Christ Church, St. Michaels: the Chapel at Dundee in a remote corner of the parish near Eastern Bay, early 1700s to late 1700s; St. John’s Chapel, just across the Miles River bridge, then a ferry, 1835-1892; St. Paul’s Chapel, Royal Oak, 1859-1910; and Holy Innocents, Claiborne, 1886-1920.
Until the War of 1812, Christ Church maintained a simple frame structure, which was replaced by a red brick building in 1814. As the parish continued to grow in parishioners and affluence, this church building was replaced by the present stone and brick building completed in 1878. Well-known New York architect, Henry Martyn Congdon (1834-1922) designed the new church. Congdon also designed St. James Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, St. Thomas Church in Hartford, Connecticut, St. Michael’s High Street in Brooklyn and the Long Walk at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. The style of architecture chosen for Christ Church was “high Victorian Gothic.”
