Who we are

We are a community, forgiven and loved by God, joyfully called to the work of reconciliation. Known throughout Cape Girardeau as "the Red Door Church" by those we serve, our mission is to share God's love and grace.

The Episcopal Church is a provincial partner in the Anglican Communion, comprising over 80 million members in 44 regional and national member churches around the globe in over 160 countries.

Christ Episcopal Church belongs to The Episcopal Diocese of Missouri. Our bishop is the Right Reverend Deon K. Johnson.

The mission of the church, as stated in the Book of Common Prayer’s catechism (p. 855), is "to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ."

As part of that mission, we’re following Jesus into loving, liberating and life-giving relationship with God, with each other and with the earth as the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement. We seek every day to love God with our whole heart, mind and soul, and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matt. 22:36-40).

Red Door Food pantry

Hunger Ministries provides The Red Door Food Pantry twice a week and a community meal once a month. We also serve a special community meal on Christmas Day.

The Red Door Food Pantry is located at Fountain House (38 N. Fountain Street), and is open Mondays from 10 – 11:30 AM, and on Thursdays from 10 – 11:30 AM. We are a small pantry that serves our neighbors and community in need. We are supplied through donations, the annual Scouting for Food drive, and the SEMO Food Bank. Neighbors utilizing our pantry will receive a box based on the size of their household with non-perishable items to make several meals, as well as frozen meat when available and fresh produce when community members share their gardens' bounty. If you are interested in volunteering for the pantry, contact Cheryl Essner.

Monthly community supper

The Community Meal is a free Sunday Supper held the last Sunday of the month in the Parish Hall at Christ Episcopal Church (101 N. Fountain St.), from 4:30 – 5:30 PM. Dine-in and carry-out are available for our neighbors. These warm meals are provided through donations by CEC members, as well as other local churches and businesses. If you or your organization would like to provide a meal, contact Cheryl Essner, call the Red Door Jubilee Center office at 573-335-2997 or email Tyler admin@christchurchcape.org

Christ Episcopal Church History

Established on September 18, 1877, Christ Episcopal Church is purported to be the second oldest church in Cape Girardeau. The church will celebrate its sesquicentennial in 2027.

Women of the Episcopal faith, Mrs. R. L. Wilson, Mrs. James B. Dennis, Mrs. Samuel Harris, Mrs. Cheney, and Mrs. Otto Buehrmann wanted a place to worship in Cape Girardeau, so in 1874 they began their quest. Mr. Robert Wilson gave them a lot located on the hill near the site of the old Fort A from the Civil War. This currently would be on the east end of Bellevue Street, known then as Windmill Hill.

The trend of the building at the time, however, was in the valley south of that point. So the lot on Windmill Hill was sold, and another piece of land was purchased which was at the time a wheat field, and where the church remains to this day. The lot is at the corner of Themis and Fountain, and was obtained from Jack Painter for $200. It was possibly owned previously by Louis Lorimer, one of the founding fathers of Cape Girardeau. Weekly services were held at the Common Pleas Courthouse until the completion of the church.

Besides the money from the congregation and the fundraising efforts of the women named above, a Merchant Minstrel was held in the St. Charles Hotel, Pink Teas at Booth Exhibits, and the Fair in the Petit New Orleans. Two young women, Ann Green Cunningham and Vergie Wilson, worked Saturdays for three weeks to secure donations from saloons. Mrs. Wilson is said to have once remarked, "A lot of whiskey money built that church!"
