Who we are
Summerhill Parish is located between the parishes of Trim to the North and Kilcock to the south & consists of the communities surrounding the churches of Coole and Dangan. Enfield / Rathmolyon parish is to the West while the parish of Moynalvey is to the East of Summerhill parish. The parish of Kilcloon is to the South East of Summerhill parish. These are the names of some of the townlands in the parish: Laracor, Summerstown, Freffans, Breemount, Umberstown, Freffans, Readstown, Drumlargan, Ginnetts, Dangan, Clonmahon, Coole, Garadice, Springvalley, Agher, Clarkestown, Ferns, Oldtown, Ardrums, and Gallow.
The name “Summerhill” dates from the year 1667, when Sir Hercules Langford, was made a Baronet. The Irish name is Drumsamhraigh. The village in the valley was built as part of the Langford demesne with its commanding entrance at the northern entrance to the village – the base of the triangle. The triangle forms the green with artisan houses on one side and the larger commercial buildings on the other side.

Summerhill parish is served by two churches – one located to the north of Summerhill village. It is dedicated to “Our Lady of Lourdes”. This church was built in 1911 and is a real gem, with beautiful mosaics and stained glass windows. It is a very popular church for weddings.
The second church is located at Coole which is about 4 km south of Summerhill village. The church in Coole is known as the “Church of the Assumption.” Coole church was built in the 1830’s and is a beautiful church also.
Both churches were extensively renovated in 1996 and are in good repair – thanks to the work of the parishioners of the time and Father Aidan Walsh, and Father Michael Whittaker.
There are primary schools in the parish. Both schools are Catholic Schools and are under the patronage of Bishop Michael Smith, Bishop of Meath.
There are a number of graveyards in the parish, Coole, close to Coole church, Drumlargan and Gallow on the Kilcock road. Gallow dates back to 1670; the Moy cemetery is a circular graveyard on the edge of the Langford Estate which dates back to 1689 and Dangan graveyard, which adjoins the church at Dangan.
