Who we are

Love God, Love people, and be followers of Jesus

We are a community church, part of the bustle of Southend-on-Sea and particularly of Prittlewell. Our passion and focus is to play a significant and increasing role within the community.

Our aim is to glorify God, not only through who we are as the worshipping fellowship of our church, but also within the local community and wider world that surrounds us. Consequently, we organise and run a wide range of activities and groups to cater for people of all ages and interests to help introduce others to God’s wonderful love, and for all of us to know him better.

We’re situated in an excellent location, easily accessible by public transport and major roads – there’s even a bus stop right outside!

Our aim is a clear – to seek God’s Kingdom first1.

The roots of God’s Kingdom are summarised in this passage from the Bible:
Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’” Matthew 22: 37-39

In these few verses we hear the voice of Jesus clearly. He commands us to love God and to love our neighbour. Our neighbour, as Jesus explains elsewhere2, is any person we meet who is in need and whom we can help. That is what it means to love people. And as this teaching is from Jesus, we hear the necessity to be followers of Jesus.

As such, we seek to:

Look, listen, and respond to God’s active presence and voice in our community and the wider world3;
Speak to, share with, and invite people to hear and respond to the Gospel;
Help the whole church grow in their faith.

COVID 19 We are now meeting on Sunday mornings with a limited capacity and streaming the services live on our Facebook page. Please see our homepage for updates on this.

Sunday is the one day in the week when we gather together to worship God and spend time all together. We meet twice on a Sunday

Our morning worship is at 10.30am with a time of sung worship, bible teaching and which is followed by tea and coffee. This includes a creche, available for young children.

Communion is celebrated on the third Sunday morning of each month.

Earls Hall Baptist Church History

Earls Hall Baptist Church was founded as a church plant in 1939 following the purchase of Priors School and it was officially opened on November 18th 1939. Subsequent new building projects, especially in the mid-1960’s resulted in significant changes to the church plot and facilities that led to what we have today. In recent years we have built a new Baptistry and had the church kitchen completely refurbished.

The first full time minister Rev. Walter Butcher was appointed in 1949 and followed by six subsequent ministers: Rev L. Addicott (1956), Rev Bryan Gilbert (1964), Rev. Bill Whitfield (1970), Rev. Alan Davies (1985), Rev. Richard Lewis (1999) and Rev. Steve Smith (2008).

The minsters have been assisted by Rev. Ian Coffey (1979), Rev. Ivor Reed (1982), Rev. Clive Pegler (1985), Rev. Paul Stow (2003) and Rev. Simon Thompsett (2011).

Currently the church is served by Rev. Tom Vernon, with his wife and their 4 children who have been part of us since 2015. We also have Katie Stanton, who is our children and family worker. The church runs an OFSTED regulated PreSchool.

Throughout its history, the church has given assent to the Baptist Union Declaration of Principle and the Evangelical Alliance Basis of Faith, operating an open membership encouraging baptism but not making it a condition of membership.

As a church we have good links with both our nearby primary schools, and good links with the surrounding community particularly through our Pre-school, Parent and Toddler Group, After School Clubs, and youth Clubs.

The Leadership are also the Trustees of the charity, and have regular monthly meetings. The church meet for formal meetings every other month. There is a church office which has a part time voluntary administrator. Caretaking duties are shared between church members.
