Ebenezer United Church History

Ebenezer/Maple Grove United Church History

The first Bible Christian Church was organized at Shebbear, Devon, England, on October 8, 1815. In 1831, two missionaries were set apart for missionary services in Canada. “Among the emigrants from Devon and Cornwall there were the Bible Christian families…who settled in Cobourg-Bowmanville-Oshawa area, particularly in the counties of Northumberland and Durham…The Courtices were typical of many west of England families, such as the Allans, the Rundles, the Hoars, the Eversons, the Doidges, and the Okes who settled in the Bowmanville area. In June 1830, Thomas Courtice settled on the second Concession of Darlington Township”. The Courtices were a Bible Christian family, and were among the founding members of the Ebenezer Church. The present Courtices are also a help and encouragement to the present Minister.

The first Ebenezer Church was a log building, with a cottage roof, and was erected in 1838 on the present Ormiston farm just north of the present church. (The Sunday School was organized in 1844). The second church building was a frame structure just north of the present church. It was built in 1848. In 1866, the third church was built for the Ebenezer congregation. “The new brick Chapel (Ebenezer) was dedicated to God, November 11, 1866.”

In the spring of 1881, the people of Ebenezer made plans to erect an end gallery in the church. At the Anniversary Services in December, the work had been completed adding much to the room and appearance of the interior of the building.

1883 was the year when plans were made for Methodist union. Union of the Churches took place in 1884, and the Congregation of Mount Carmel, a Wesleyan Church, that had been built in 1876, situated on the north side of Highway 2, united with Ebenezer and Maple Grove. The charge became ‘South Darlington’.
In 1916, when the Methodist Church of Courtice united with Ebenezer and Maple Grove, it resulted in the Courtice Methodist United Church Circuit, an arrangement that continued until 1925. Following the church union in 1925, the pastoral charge became known, and remains as, Ebenezer-Maple Grove United Church of Canada.
