Evangelist Temple Church Of God In Christ History
In the year of our Lord, 1949, in the city of Houston, the state of Texas the late Dr. Joe E. Nelson founded the Evangelist Temple Church of God in Christ.
Through the years, several locations served as the home of the church: Nagle, Berry St., St. Charles, Holman, and Dowling Street.
Dr. Nelson stood boldly on his motto as he took his faith walk: Good, Better, Best; Never let it rest until your good is better and your better is best.
Leader: Constantly making improvements when and where needed, in 1973 Dr. Nelson and congregation purchased 5 1/2 acres of land in the South Park area. This beautiful edifice in which we now stand was constructed in March 1983 and completed in March of 1984.
How ironic, on Labor Day, September 1, 1985, Dr. Joe E. Nelson transitioned from labor to reward, but not before leaving a solid foundation for the church.
In January 1986, Superintendent Rufus Kyles, Jr. was appointed pastor of Evangelist Temple. He was elevated to Bishop of Texas Southeast First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction in October 2001 which enlarged his territory to share his God Given Gift, Preaching! Along with other ministries, under his leadership he implemented his vision, “Each One Reach One”.
As of July 2016, The Elder Terence K. Kirk presently serves as administrative pastor of Evangelist Temple. He accepted the assignment and without hesitation began putting his shoulder to the plow to keep the church afloat. It is evident through his powerful teaching and preaching, Wednesday night “One Hour of Power” and Sunday Messages.
Now let us praise the Lord in the House of the Lord which he has kept for more than 70 years.
