The Haistens have not spent their entire lives in ministry, but ministry is what eventually led them to meeting. L.R. worked for the city after high school in his hometown of Clayton, New Mexico and would later serve in the Army before moving to Dalhart where he owned a grocery store. Dr. Fran was an early childhood instructor at Western New Mexico University for over 30 years. They both felt their mission in life was to serve God and others. L.R. had pastored churches in San Jon, New Mexico and Nara Visa, New Mexico and was continuing to do so after the death of his first wife. After the death of her husband, Dr. Fran continued pastoring in Iowa for 8 years, but decided it was time to go home to New Mexico. Dr. Fran was serving as a chaplain in a care center when a group of people came in to sing to the residents one Friday. The couple began talking on the phone, dating and eventually got married.
L.R. said helping others is what he likes best about serving as pastor. Both L.R. and Dr. Fran want the community to know their doors at Assembly of God as always open.
"This church is open to everyone. You are welcome to come worship the Lord, " says Dr. Fran. "If you have needs, He will meet those needs. We want to be open and loving people and welcome them into the house of the Lord."
The Haistens have a column titled "Ask the Preachers" which will appear on page 11B periodically in the Red River Sun.
