First Baptist Church of Nipomo History
On May 13, 2011, the First Baptist Church of Nipomo celebrated its 50th anniversary. We are privileged to have such a rich history of service to God and the California Central Coast.
Here is an early history of First Baptist Church Nipomo originally presented for the 20th anniversary of the church (author unknown).
In late 1960 a small group of people met several times in home prayer meetings seeking God's will in the establishment of a Southern Baptist Church in Nipomo.
Feeling a definite leading of the Lord, this group contacted First Southern Baptist Church of Grover City asking them to be a sponsoring church. It was agreed upon and on January 8, 1961 the Nipomo Baptist Mission held it's first worship service in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Jim Berryhill. on East Dana Street. Lee Finley was called as pastor. The piano was in the garage, the song leader in the dining room, and the congregation in the living room.
After a few services in the Berryhill home, the church rented a small store building on South Oakglen where services were held while a bond program was in negotiation for the present 4 1/2 acres.
The mission was chartered as a church Easter Sunday, 1961. Later, that same year, the congregation began meeting in their new building which served as educational space and sanctuary.
In 1965, the church borrowed $50,000 from the Home Mission Board, and the second building was erected.
Construction Timeline
1961 - Berryhill Hall built as first sanctuary
1965 - Current sanctuary built
1976 - Church parsonage built
2010 - Original steeple removed from Berryhill Hall due to roof leaks.
