Who we are
The focus of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is community. We care for one another and just as equally minister to others without any “strings” nor limitations placed upon our love. This has made us diverse and accepting, united by common purpose with an inclusive like-heartedness which naturally expands our circle of friends.
You may have driven by and seen our sign on Todds Lane, locally known as "God's Way" with numerous houses of faith along its length. Rooted in the Hampton/Newport News area since 1888, First Christian has been at our current location since 1961. Our expansive 1-story building is set back from the road, and is equipped with fully accessible entries, sanctuary, classrooms, fellowship hall, and ADA-compliant restrooms. Most of us park in the lots to the rear of the sanctuary, but there is also plenty in front!
The learning hour begins on Sundays at 9:30 a.m., with groups for all ages, and worship follows at 10:45 a.m. Some wear traditional "Sunday clothes" and others dress casually. Whatever works! We find joy in one another, whether long-time attendees or first time visitors, and we will learn your name!
Worship services and music are a mix of traditional and contemporary. Strong choirs and solid preaching, with the Lord’s Supper on every Sunday being open to all. The pastor likes to keep it short with a 12-15 minute sermon and blogs his sermons for those unable to attend or who want to study and reflect. Children are are highly welcomed in worship, and for those with health issues or little ones, an ADA-compliant "family-style" restroom is just off the sanctuary. A nursery is available upon request for babies and pre-schoolers, with all workers trained and background-checked.
You will find we are a congregation committed to volunteer service, whether in supporting worship and education, tending to those in health crisis, or the two dozen who support our weekly "The Welcome Table" feeding ministry. Service to others defines us and it’s changed us. We actively host 15 helping and social community organizations, ranging from multiple Girl Scout troops, to AA and Al-Anon, and provide support to local elementary and middle schools.
If you have questions or need more information, please call the church office at (757) 826-0711. You can also check us out on social media, or just stop by the church.
Office Hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 AM - 2 PM. If you need to make an appointment outside those hours, call to make arrangements with the pastor.

Vinson Miller, who prefers to just go by 'Vinson,' entered the ministry in 1983, serving as a pastor of congregations in Kentucky, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, before serving 24 years as a Navy Chaplain. Retiring from the Navy in 2017, he was called to be the pastor of First Christian Church in November 2017, drawn by a congregation that is an inclusive, loving community that easily welcomes new folk and is centered on community service through weekly 'The Welcome Table' that is to both address food insecurity issues and create a place of community for people to gather from every walk of life. He will see anyone, regardless of faith or no faith, if they need a safe person to sort out life.
