Leader Bio:
Rev. Nick Koontz is happy to be serving in Richlands. He has a deep appreciation for Gospel centered communities that build each other up. Formerly a biologist and organic chemist, he is fascinated by the inner-workings of life. But, many of the “whys” of life remained unanswered and his scientific background only answered the “hows.” He received his Masters of Divinity from Brite Divinity School at TCU. Nick greatly enjoys serving with down to earth folks in a beautiful part of the world. Outside of work, he likes to hike, bicycle, play guitar, read, and spend time with friends and family.

First Christian Church History
Jesus Christ called His Church to be One Body. He needs to be worshipped more than any particular creed or denomination. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was founded on this knowledge as a merger of two movements in the 1800’s for Christian unity. We are a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. Disciples witness, love, and serve from our doorsteps to the ends of the Earth. (Learn more about the Disciples of Christ on our denominational website).
First Christian Church in Richlands is the oldest standing church in Richlands; being called together in 1897, establishing our church building in 1908, and has a long history of welcoming all people. We were founded under many adverse conditions, being a historic church in the center of town when there were only a handful of saloons, a house of “ill-repute,” and a booming coal mine. Of the many stories of our history, a favorite is that an early leader of our church reportedly closed up a wasp hive using a corn cob, threw it into the aforementioned house, and then preached to the crowd that was running from the building on the dangers of lust!
Our guiding mission then remains the same today (though no longer with the use of wasp hives). We are deeply committed to celebrating the Gospel, caring for the community of Richlands, praying for and serving one another. Our sanctuary is recognized as a historic building and continues to serve us well through the centuries.
Consider joining us for a service or contacting us. When you do, ask about our published book on the history of our church. There is no dress code, no exclusive memberships, and no intentional disrespect. Church is a commitment and we honor you when you make that choice.
