Who we are

Mission Statement: Micah 6:8 What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God.

With Micah 6:8 as our guiding scripture: Our mission is to understand, believe, adhere to and implement the teachings of Jesus Christ in this place and time. To this end, we seek for God's strength where we are weak, faith where we have doubts, insights and enlightenment where we cannot comprehend, and generous hearts when we are reluctant to give what Christ asks of us.

*Buried in the Broadalbin Cemetery

Vail Mills Cemetery

On May 1, 1834 the First Presbyterian Church of Mayfield (later the First Presbyterian Church of Broadalbin) in Fonda's Bush leased the land on which the Vail Mills cemetery is located from Joseph Major for the sum of $5.00. The lease contract stipulated that annual rent should be paid to the landowners but did not identify the amount. The church agreed also "to keep the said premises enclosed with a good, sufficient and lawful fence at all times and forever."

The church building, occupied in 1800, stood on a lot in front of the graveyard and was occupied until 1840. In 1854 the First Presbyterian Church received permission from the Fulton County Court to sell "the church building and the one fourth acre of land on which it stood." The Court directed that the proceeds from the sale or as much as might be necessary should be applied to making repairs upon and keeping in repair the cemetery. Records show that the last payment to "Joseph Major for rent of burying ground" was on October 22, 1854.

In later years this cemetery became an abandoned cemetery with no individual, organization or group assuming responsibility for its maintenance or upkeep. The Mayfield Highway Department occasionally mowed the grass in the central area.

In the mid 1980's Edward Herba, a member of the Presbyterian Sunday School, asked the Reverend Paul Moyer if there were any significant project he might undertake for the church as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Eagle Scout Award. Mr. Moyer suggested that Chip might consider doing some "clean up work " at the cemetery in anticipation of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the congregation.

Restoring a long-neglected cemetery filled with decades worth of poison ivy, weeds, stumps, branches and litter was not a minor undertaking. With vision and patience, Chip Herba outlined a plan of action, generated interest, and galvanized the church community into action. In 1989 the project was completed after many hours of labor, historical research, and painstaking attention to detail. The church provided a new fence as agreed to by the terms of the 1834 lease. The church and the Mayfield Historical Society provided money for an official historical marker. A longstanding eyesore had become a site of historical interest.
