First United Methodist Church History

HISTORY OF BOYD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 1895-1989

Boyd was established in 1893 as a town on the Rock Island Railroad. Evidently a Methodist Church was sin---established, for in 1894 the North-Texas Conference gave $250 to build a church house. In the fall of 1896 the church had 90 members and was placed in the Bowie District.

In 1900 the Boyd Circuit had four churches, each with it's own church building. The charge now had 233 members by the end of 1901.

In the fall of 1902 Boyd and Garvin were joined together as a circuit. There was only one church building in the charge, supposedly at Boyd. In 1907 the circuit stood at 302 members.

The year 1918 was probably looked back on as a year of "tested faith", as a tornado swept through Boyd destroying many homes and the First Methodist Church building. All records of the church were lost.

In 1929 records show that Orlanda Daniell Shiflet joined the church and became organist, a position she holds to this day. Also, at one time, Myrtle Daniell (Orlanda's mother) was church pianist.

About 1925 the Charlie Rickman family moved their membership to Boyd; and their daughter, Roberta (Stevens) later joined the church and remains a faithful member today.

The records of 1952-53 show that Porter and Monna Brown joined Boyd Methodist. Bill and Mary Marcum joined the church in the late 1950's, and all are still active members today.

For sometime the members had wanted to purchase a lot. Rev. Charles Gipson called a church conference and asked for pledges to buy a lot. Miss Lillian Rickman immediately responded with a pledge. Money was raised that day with which to buy a lot.

In 1968 Rev. Ray Hennigh appointed a building committee who selected 51/2 acres on Highway 730. Also during Rev. Hennigh's ministry Boyd voted to go full time and to end their past practice of having student ministers fill the pastorate. Ray was the first fulltime minister to serve.

In 1972 plans were formulated to build a new church. On Easter Sunday, March 30, 1975, the first service was held in the new building. On April 20, 1975, the consecration of the church building was held.

As a means of raising money to pay off the bank loan on the building, the church began its "Lord's Acre" project, the first being held November 3, 1973. In four years, 1979, the church paid off the bank loan, not only from the proceeds of the Lord's Acre, but from the dedicated support of the members as well. The Lord's Acre continues to be a major project of the church with the funds being expended to purchase needed items for the church and parsonage, for missionary and outreach support, and for specifically designatedprograms. The Lord's Acre is held in October each year.

In 1939 our rolls show a membership of 176. We will receive a new minister, Rev. Betty Richardson. Our congregation continues to look forward to a future of membership growth, starting a new building plan, and looking for the will of God in our lives.

All praise is given to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit for guidance in carrying out the mission of the Boyd United Methodist Church.
