Grace Lutheran Church History
A SHORT HISTORY OF GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH
Grace began in 1986 as a group of young Lutheran families worshipping in the Episcopal Church on Sunday evenings with Pastor Roger Vegdahl from Bethel Lutheran Church in Roseville. All through these years the congregation was referred to as the "Lincoln Mission."
During the next four years , Grace was served by interns supervised by Pastor Ray Olson of Advent Lutheran in Citrus Heights. In 1987 a "Live Nativity" was staged on Christmas Eve as an outreach to the community.
By 1990 the group was large enough to call Pastor Jim Patterson as their part-time pastor. Pastor Patterson started Confirmation instruction and a vacation Bible School ministry to the community.
In 1996 (ten years later) four families from the congregation signed a lease with option to purchase an old house on Second Street, remodeling this house into a house of worship. From the beginning, the property was understood to be a "starter home" until a larger site could be secured.
In 1999 a Mission Developer was sent to Grace by the Division of Outreach of the ELCA. Pastor Dunn arrived to shepherd this flock and to grow the congregation in Lincoln.
In August 2001 Grace was finally chartered as a fully fledged congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America - a day the people of Grace had been dreaming of since the beginning!
In 2002 Grace called its first full-time clergy, Pastor Janet Carlson, and Grace began new ministries: Altar Guild, Choir, Men's Breakfast Bible Study, Grace Lutheran Church Women, Confirmation Bible Camp, Eucharistic Ministry, and two new women's Bible study groups.
In September 2003 Grace purchased the Second Street Property at long last and a seminary intern, Judith Morgado, was assigned to work with Pastor Carlson for a year. The Foothills Conference supported the internship program financially.
In 2005 the members of Grace unanimously passed the "Red Robin Vision" for the future of the church:
To grow the congregation to 400 members
To purchase property for a new church
To reach out to the community of Lincoln
To better serve the families of Lincoln with children and youth programming
To share the good news of Jesus Christ
In 2005 the people of Grace voted unanimously to purchase six acres of land at the corner of Sierra College Boulevard and Penny Lane on which to build a new facility!
In January 2006 Grace leased 750 square feet of office space one block north of the church at 620 Third Street. The church offices moved out of the Sunday School rooms and these rooms were refurbished for children.
During the spring of 2006 Grace held its first Capital Campaign Drive, raising almost $400,000 against a purchase price of $550,000.
In spring 2007 new adult education programs began with a monthly Book Club and a weekly Bible Study.
