Harmony Missionary Baptist Church called by God to do a mighty work for His kingdom was organized and established on May 17, 1964 by Pastor I. H. Lewis at the Veteran Hall located at 1970 Chestnut Street, Berkeley California. Church services were held at this location for approximately one year and then moved to Grove Street in 1965 where Harmony remained for one year. The next move was to 1628 Alcatraz Avenue in Berkeley, CA and remained there until the latter part of 1966 until the work was completed on the building at 1916 Woolsey Street, Berkeley CA where Harmony remained until a fire destroyed the building in 1976.

After the fire the church had no place to worship until God stepped in and laid it on the heart of Pastor T.J. Prince, the Pastor of Abyssinian Missionary Baptist Church to open their doors to Pastor I.H. Lewis and the Harmony members for worship services. Harmony held services at Abyssinian for a few months and then moved to the Y.M.C.A located at 3265 Market Street in Oakland, CA. It wasn’t long after the move to the Y.M.C.A. that God blessed Pastor I.H. Lewis to purchase with his own personal money the property at 4113 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland CA, where Harmony remains to this present day.

Unfortunately, Pastor I.H. Lewis had been in ill health for quite some time and in 1979 his illness became worse and he knew he would not be here much longer. He knew God was getting ready to call him home so he prayed to God for a Pastor of Harmony. His prayers were answered and the Holy Spirit led him to a young man by the name of Pastor A.L. Cobbs, Sr. who was the pastor of the First Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church of Oakland, CA.

Pastor A.L. Cobbs, Sr became the Pastor of Harmony Missionary Baptist Church on his birthday, September 24, 1979. He was installed as Pastor in November 1979. There were 25 members at the time Pastor Cobbs became Pastor. However, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the 25 became hundreds.
Our Accomplishments under the leadership of Pastor A.L. Cobbs, Sr.:

1979 – Two Dodge Passenger Vans purchased
1980 – Live Radio Broadcast (Outreach Ministry)
1985 – Church Cornerstone installed
1993 – Family Center and classrooms added to the church
1995 – 4-plex building on Linden Street in Oakland was purchased
2002 – Tour Bus purchased
2009 – Stair Lift Chair installed for those unable to climb stairs to the Fellowship Hall

We were called to a work with a vision to build a ministry after God’s own heart, which would reach out into the community as well as reach the uttermost parts of the earth, winning souls to Christ, laying hands on the sick and bringing deliverance to set the captives free.

Our experience with God and His plan for us has been distinctive. Our foundation was established in holiness and sanctification that is being set apart for the boundless work.

Pastor Cobbs served for 31 ½ years. Then on April 5, 2011 a call was made from heaven to Pastor A.L. Cobbs, Sr. saying well done my faithful servant, you have fought a good fight, you have kept the faith, you have given your best, now it’s time to come home and rest.

On May 31, 2016, the Lord blessed us with a new Pastor, a visionary, a humble man with a business mind to do great feats for the kingdom of God, Pastor A.L. Perkins. Under his leadership, the Lord is blessing us and pouring out His Spirit upon us bountifully. The Lord continues to add to the church and many souls are led to Christ under his leadership.

God is preparing us to do a mighty and glorious work for Him as we move forward to develop new and innovative programs to enhance our ministry. We are building to the glory and honor of God, so that His kingdom will come and His Divine will, be done.

We have come this far by faith in God, and we have never seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. The Lord said, upon this rock, I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. The Lord is the King over this house of worship, and the Holy Spirit governs our ministry. He has done great and marvelous things and we are elated with joy and gladness. For over 50 years the Lord has given us sound doctrine, wisdom, power, and love. He has kept us, strengthened us, and healed us. He has delivered us, freed us, rewarded and blessed us mightily. Bless the name of JESUS!
