Holy Family Parish History

Holy Family Parish was formed as a consolidation of 3 ethnic parishes that existed within a 3-block radius in Luzerne, PA: St. Ann (Lithuanian), Sacred Heart of Jesus (German), and St. John Nepomucene (Slovak). The parishes were yoked under one pastor in 1995 as the Catholic Community of Luzerne and consolidated in 1999, adopting the new parish name of Holy Family on the Feast of the Holy Family, December 26, 1999. The community entered the new millennium as a new united parish under the pastoral leadership of Fr. Robert Arnold, who spent the next two years leading the parish in prudent stewardship, consolidating and right-sizing the parish real estate holdings.

In 2001, Fr. David Cappelloni was named pastor, and under his leadership the new parish community began to unify in discipleship with social and fundraising activities, the establishment of a Food Pantry to feed the hungry in community outreach, and a major capital improvement project to renovate the primary worship space on Bennett Street. Fr. Richard Fox served as pastor from 2007 to 2009. He was succeeded by Fr. Michael Zipay, who remained at Holy Family from 2009 to 2015 and led the parish to financial stability. Deacon Peter Smith served as the Parish Life Coordinator from 2015 to 2017, and Fr. Walter Jenkins, CSC, took the helm as pastor in July 2017.

The parish maintains one worship space, at 574 Bennett Street, Luzerne, and a rectory/office, at 574 Rear Bennett Street, Luzerne.

The parish is responsible for the maintenance of two cemeteries: St. Ann's in Lehman and St. John's in Courtdale.

The Holy Family Food Pantry is located in the basement of the rectory and is supported by contributions of food and finances from the parish and the community at large.
