Who we are

Hi, I’m Bill Walles, the Lead pastor of Hope Covenant Church – a new partnership for Snohomish County!

I was blessed with the opportunity to start Hope in Lake Stevens about 7 years ago. We began Hope because we believed there were people just like you who wanted to be part of something greater. People who wanted to build community and celebrate life together. We believe this all happens when we see ourselves as part of God’s great story of Hope found in Jesus Christ. One of the things that makes our part in this story unique is our combination of Core Values that fill everything we do here at Hope. Joy, Honesty, Generosity, Simplicity, and Compassion have been part of our story from the beginning, and will remain at our core no matter what changes for us in the future. Speaking of change: there’s a new chapter in our story - a move into our own building in Everett. By joining forces with the Covenant church in Everett we truly believe we can reach even more people in Snohomish County – and invite them to build this community of Hope with us. Which brings our story back to you. We believe that the Church is the only organization that exists for those who aren’t yet part of the community! Finding us on the web is a great start – but we want you to come grow with us. We need your passion, your excitement. We need you to find your part in God’s epic story.

Leader Bio:
I helped start Hope Covenant Church, along with a wonderful core group of great leaders, nearly 7 years ago. However, doing a church plant wasn’t always my life's plan. I grew up hoping to be an actor, and even went to Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma as a theatre major. Fortunately, God could see that I was never going to make it on the stage and called me into ministry instead. I went to Seminary in the Twin Cities, where I also married my college sweetheart, Sarah. From there, I’ve had the chance to serve in ministry in some exotic and fun places like Mexico, Phoenix, and even Omaha! Sarah and I now have 4 amazing children, and couldn’t be any happier than to call Lake Stevens and Hope our home for years to come. We have loved our new partnership in Everett - and can't wait to see what God does next with all of us.

Children and Youth Activities

Under 12s:
Early Learning

In our Early Learning classroom we offer care and Jesus-focused learning and play for ages 0-5 years. During FLEX Time (9:00-10:15 a.m.) offered every Sunday during the school year, care is offered for young children while adults attend classes.

During our worship gathering (10:30-noon), Christ-centered learning and care is provided throughout the year by professional Children’s Ministry workers and volunteers through storytelling, art, and exploration.

Elementary Discipleship

Our elementary children (grades K-6) have the opportunity for growth in Jesus through our Sunday morning FLEX Time class (9:00-10:15 a.m.) offered every Sunday during the school year.

At 10:30 a.m. children spend time in service with their parents and the faith community worshiping through song, prayer, and community life. During the sermon portion of the worship gathering (approximately 30 minutes), children have another opportunity to encounter Jesus through Kids’ Church.

Under 18s:
The Journey Discipleship/Confirmation

We offer our 7th-8th grade Middle School students a discipleship/confirmation class called “The Journey.” This two-year program is held during the school year and focuses on personal exploration of the Christian faith through year-long surveys of Old and New Testaments of the Bible. One goal of this class is to instill the devotional habit of spending daily time with God. Under the leadership of mentors, the youth discuss verses and ideas and engage in activities which bring deeper understanding and meaning to the Word of God.

High School LifeTogether Group

High School students spend time together learning and growing in their relationship with Jesus during their Sunday morning FLEX Time class (9:00-10:15 a.m.) offered during the school year. Topically and Bible-based lessons offer the springboard for inquisitive conversation and insightful learning with this age group.

Hope Covenant Church History

2 churches merge under 1 roof

Sanctuary Covenant is now Hope Covenant and is located in Everett.

One was established long ago; the other, a relative upstart.

The century-old church in Everett was founded by Swedish immigrants in their new land.

The Lake Stevens church was born a few years back. It didn’t have a building of its own. The pastor often wrote sermons on a MacBook in coffee shops and he’d deliver them each Sunday in an often cold middle school cafeteria with poor acoustics. He wore phony sideburns at the first service, which coincided with the birthday of Elvis Presley.

The congregation at the older church dwindled in recent years. The new church of more than 100 was growing.

The churches would support each other from time to time, lending musicians as needed and with youth group activities.

Now they are united under one roof.

Passersby along the 4500 block of Rucker Avenue might have noticed a change to the reader board. What was the Sanctuary Covenant Church is now Hope Covenant Church, which was what it was called in Lake Stevens.
