We are a warm and friendly congregation. The original edifice opened in 1849, as a private residence. Fire destoyed that building. The 'new' church was built on the old rubble stone foundation. We do have some access problems, although the wheelchair ramp facilitates entry. We hold our monthly Fellowship Coffee after church in the narthex. This allows easy access. Hope has a tradition of practising 'Christian hospitality.' It continues.

Mission Statement

We are a caring Christian community of many cultures proclaiming the Word of God through the liturgy and traditions of the Lutheran Church; believing we are justified through faith, with grace; hoping to use our gifts to serve our community and ourselves.

We gather to hear, to praise, and to share the Word of God and our gifts because "Here we stand; we can do no other."

We wish to extend a special welcome to the students in our city and invite you to join in our services.

For any international students who may be unfamiliar with the Christian faith we would like to assure you that visiting with us will impose no commitment on you. The only commitment is one that you choose to make for yourself when you accept the Word of God in your heart.

Visitors and new members are always welcome in our church.

Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 4 Second Street in Saint John, New Brunswick, began as a congregation of Danish immigrants who came to Canada in the early 1900s. Elijah Danish Lutheran Church was organized on November 15, 1931 with the assistance of Pastor Ravnkilde Møller. Various buildings in the community were used for services before the Second Street property was acquired in 1935. Rev. Emil Nommesen was called to lead the congregation in 1947, and the name was changed to First Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1949 a fire destroyed the church building, and the new building was dedicated on August 7, 1950. In July 1966 the congregation changed the current name, Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church.
