Who we are
What We Believe
We believe the scriptures to be the inspired Word of God and our sole authority in all matters of faith and practice. We use only the King James Version in all teaching, preaching and practice.
We believe the Holy Scripture, the sixty-six books from Genesis through Revelation, to be the inspired Word of God, written by holy men of God who were controlled by the Holy Spirit as to the very words used; totally without error, that shall remain, until the end of the age, the only complete and final revelation of the will of God to man; basic to Christian unity and the supreme authority by which all human conduct, creeds and opinions should be tried. (II Timothy 3:15-17; Hebrews 4:12; I Peter 1:10; II Peter 1:21)

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Worship Languages
Dress code:
There is no dress code at Independent Baptist Church of Anchorage for members or guests. Church is certainly not a fashion show but many of our members dress in a way fitting to meet with any King or Dignitary, after all we are here to worship the King of Kings. Our ministry leaders dress in more traditional “Sunday” dress — the men in a dress shirt and dress slacks, typically with a tie, and the women in modest dress; however, our main goal is that you would feel welcome and comfortable during your visit here at IBCA!

Independent Baptist Church of Anchorage History
In 1989, Stan Roach and his family along with a handful of families started meeting in the Surrey family’s home. This was the beginning of the Independent Baptist Church of Anchorage.
Their first building, outside the home, was a small house on Tudor Road in Anchorage. The following year, 1990, the church moved into the “Warehouse,” a subdivided warehouse on Quinhagak Street. Over the years, the Lord blessed and the church quickly outgrew the allotted space in the warehouse. Doors continued to be closed at each attempt to find a new location.
In 1997, Terry McGovern became assistant pastor serving under Pastor Roach.
In the Fall of 2000, the Lord blessed. The First Korean Baptist Church in Anchorage was selling their building and they accepted IBCA’s 0% financing offer, wanting to keep the building a Baptist church. On January 28, 2001, the Independent Baptist Church of Anchorage held their first meeting in their new building on Karluk Street in the Fairview neighborhood.
Joshua Roach, the son of Pastor Stan Roach, became the assistant pastor in 2002 after the McGovern family surrendered to serve as missionaries to Papua New Guinea.
Again, quickly outgrowing the space in the building on Karluk, the Lord showered blessings upon the church. Pastor Roach was contacted by their Realtor about Grace Baptist Church’s pending closure and property sale. Grace, like the Korean church, wanted to keep the building in the hands of a Baptist church. The Summer of 2007, IBCA moved into the new location on 68th Ave.
In late 2013, unbeknownst to Pastor Stan Roach and Terry McGovern, the Lord was leading both men in new directions. Pastor Roach was looking to retire as pastor of the Independent Baptist Church of Anchorage and enter full-time service as missionary/evangelist to America and Terry McGovern was being drawn back to the States. In January 2014, a call was made to have Terry McGovern become the next pastor of IBCA and confirmed by vote of the church in May 2014. On August 23, 2015, Pastor Roach retired with Pastor McGovern taking over leadership of the church.
After serving faithfully for nearly 13 years, Pastor Josh Roach announced his family’s desire to return to full-time mission work in Alaska and the northwest United States; stepping down as assistant pastor on December 31, 2015.
