Leesville United Methodist Church History
Whether you are an “old timer” who has lived in the area for years, or a new arrival to “Downtown” Leesville, or are a new or prospective resident at Leesville Lake – we are excited about meeting you and welcoming you to our town and to our Church. You are part of a very special “Leesville family.”
Leesville is the second oldest incorporated town in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is second only to Jamestown. The town is rich in history and dates back to 1793 when land was sold on both sides of the Staunton River to John Lee by Jacobus Early. From this, the town got its name “Leesville”.
It may be hard for some to imagine now but there was a time when Leesville boasted of:
Four General Merchandise stores, two tanneries, three blacksmith shops, a grist mill, four physicians, two tailors, two cabinet makers, two carpenters, a wheelwright shop, two churches, two mines (barites and manganese), a Masonic Lodge, a hemp and carding factory, a cotton gin, a bank, a barroom, a girl’s school, and even a Post Office which still stands today. There were even then a number of houses in Leesville and a crowded church on the hill.
Standing on the hill just past Carter’s Store (an historic building dating back to mid-1800s) is the Leesville United Methodist Church and its Sunday school building. The Sunday School building was the public school for the town of Leesville for many years. Today it is used by our Church for reunions, meetings, special meals, and receptions.
