Mosaic Church of the Nazarene History
Our Name
Our name, Mosaic, was chosen for two reasons. First, Mosaic describes our diversity. We are gathered by God from various ethnicities, socio-economic realities, ages, and cultures. Secondly, Mosaic describes the fact that we are all broken and, like a mosaic, we gather together in our brokenness to create something beautiful for God.
Our Vision
Our vision is to become a diverse community of friends who are learning the way of Jesus together.
Our Passion
The passion of Mosaic is the Kingdom of God; that is God’s revolution of grace, peace, compassion, and love. This revolution was Jesus’ passion and it is therefore our passion as people who desire to live in the way of Jesus by His Spirit.
Our Traditions
Mosaic is a Christian community that belongs to a specific faith family called the Church of the Nazarene. Our ‘interesting’ name comes from the fact that Nazareth was Jesus’ home town. But Nazareth had a reputation for being a hick town full of political rabble rousers and undesirable people. We see a hint of this in John’s gospel when Nathanael asks this question about Jesus, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth”(John 1.46)? And so our name was chosen by our founders as a declaration of our tradition’s mission and identity. Church of the Nazarene could be translated Church for People of Lowly Status. We are therefore called as Nazarenes to participate in acts of justice on behalf of people who are without power. Our tradition’s name serves as a constant reminder that we are to be a community serving broken people from all walks of life because we optimistically believe that God loves everyone and that God can heal our brokenness.
