New Chapel United Methodist Church History
In 1825 a small group of neighbors, of Dutch descent, met at the log home of Peter Fiser for their first worship service. On October 15, 1844, there was a deed recorded of two acres of land to the Methodist Church from Frederick Cobb. A log cabin was constructed by the members for their first church building with pews made in a sawmill out of slabs with legs. This church was known as the Old Dutch Chapel and it was located on Hood’s Branch Road.
In 1868, forty-three years later, the congregation outgrew with modest log church and built a new building about 1/2 mile from the original log church which was purchased for $40 for one acre. The congregation built it themselves and renamed it appropriately to New Chapel.
In 1908, the third church building was built on the road side on the John Wallace Darden Farm, only a short distance from the older church built in 1868. Material from the old building was used and the collection plate was passed on time and enough money was collected to build the new church. The congregation met in the one-room schoolhouse while the new Church was being built. That new church was a pretty, white frame structure by the side of the hard-surfaced road. Mary Lillian Crunk Darden was the first pianist at the age of 11; the surfaced road drew many new members; Annie Lou Powell lead the Epworth League for the teens, Youth attended camp at Montgomery Bell Park; in 1920 the women’s Society of Christian Service was formed; between 1908-1948 there were as many as 6 churches on the Red River Circuit.
In 1948 another church was built in hopes of acquiring new members. In 1953 the church building was dedicated and is the one we still use today on Hwy 49 West. In 1957 New Chapel became a station church; a night circle for United Methodist Women was formed — the Love Circle. In 1977 a Men’s Club was formed and the church parking lot was paved. In 1981 a third Women’s Society was formed – The Circle of Friends. The first Annual Country Fair was also held to raise money to send members on a conference sponsored mission trip. Around 1990 the Fellowship Hall addition was finished and in 1994 we hired our first youth directors. In 2015 the covered Pavilion was built by the men of the church on land previously purchased behind the church.
Over the years many changes have occurred to meet needs, as well as changing faces as members have come and gone. We are all part of the same family, the family of God. As our church continues to grow in members, we hope that the special feeling of family and the love for one another never changes.
