Who we are
Our Lady of Peace new Catholic Church was officially dedicated in ceremonies held on Sunday, October 18, 1981. Over 400 parishioners and friends, along with church dignitaries from Alberta and British Columbia were in attendance for the celebration.
The Most Reverend Fergus O’Grady, Bishop of the Diocese of Prince George, Father Jungbluth, and Father Conway lead the celebrants and guests around the outside of the building in a blessing ceremony.
…High mass was celebrated with the dedication of the new church. Participating in the mass were Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus from Prince George and Fort St. John, the Prince George College Choir under the direction of Carl Forsberg.
… Assisting with the celebration were the two Sisters in Chetwynd, Sister Ignatias and Sister Doreen, as well as readers Theresa Bernard, CWL president and Andy Teslyk of the Parish Council.
…Rev. Al Noonan, in his homily concluded by the blessing of “May this new church bring you closer to God and each other, helping you to reach out and serve each other to the end of your day”.
…Originally, when Fr. Jungbluth came to the Peace River Area in 1937 and built the St. Theresa Church at Moberly Lake, he served his parishioners by travelling on horseback, then motorcycle, then a truck and then a car. Then, in 1958 he built the old Our Lady of Peace Church in Chetwynd; this old church will now serve as a meeting place for the Lions Club and be moved to a site near Don Titus School.
