Who we are
Welcome to Our Lady of the Rosary, Brixton
We welcome you to our beautiful 19th-century church designed by Arthur J. Phelps, as Brixton Independent Church, damaged in WW2 and reopened in 1953 as a Catholic Church.
This Church has had a long history of service to the local community here in Brixton and in the Archdiocese of Southwark. I find it a great honour to serve as Parish Priest of this historic parish.
Things visible and beautiful like the Church, serves as great and amazing testimonies to our faith and to the great and extraordinary people who sacrificed so much over the years and centuries to build it up. But also things that are not quite visible like our faith history, remembering ordinary simple and unsung Catholics from all places, who worked very hard to build this parish and all the structures, including the founders, the Neo-catechumenate community, and parishioners who helped build St. Helen’s Catholic Primary School, Brixton.
We have a fantastic legacy of living our simple everyday lives, helping one another in all the circumstances of life and faith, showing love to the needy, feeding the poor and caring for our senior citizens. My role and that of the Curate is to serve you and help you during our time here and to work with you to leave a legacy for the Catholics of the future.
Each generation brings new challenges and we hope to use a new and fresh approach to bring the word of God to people's lives. We invite you to avail our parish of your great talents and gifts to help us deliver on our parish vision and goals. Find yourself a place in the many ministries and service areas in our Church.

Fr. Innocent Abonyi, MSP, is a Priest of the Missionary Society of St. Paul of Nigeria. He was ordained a catholic priest for the missions on the 3rd of July, 1999 in Gwagwalada, Abuja, Nigeria. Since his priestly ordination, he was involved in the formation of priests as spiritual director and lecturer in two seminaries in Nigeria (1999-2001; 2003-2006). He completed his post graduate studies in Ireland (All Hallows College, Dublin, 2001 - 2003) and Oxford Brookes University, England (2012-2014). He has served in a few parishes in England and is now the current parish priest of Our Lady of the Rosary, Brixton from November 14, 2019 till date.

Our Lady of the Rosary History
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was originally designed by Arthur J. Phelps and built in 1870 by Myers & Son. The building is said to have been erected by the congregation of Claylands chapel in commemoration of the 23 years ministry of the Revd James Baldwin Brown. Formally the Brixton Independent Church, it reopened in 1953 as a Catholic Church.
The large red brick Early English Gothic style church was heavily damaged during the Second World War and subsequently put on the market. It was acquired by the Diocese and was repaired and adapted for Catholic use by Alleyn & Mansel.
The galleries in the nave aisles were removed (apart from their structural framework) and the church hall demolished and replaced with a new hall and vestry. Alterations were also made to the forecourt area in front of the church, including the addition of a baptistery. The restored church was opened on 8 December 1953.
In 1960 the former clergy house behind the church was demolished and replaced with a large new presbytery, built from designs by Justin Alleyn.
The church has recently (2010) been considerably embellished by mural paintings by Mauritzia Lees in the apse, in Byzantine style. Today, the church is served by the Missionary Society of St Paul with Fr Innocent Abonyi, MSP as Parish Priest.
