Our Redeemer Lutheran Church History
Our Redeemer had its beginning in 1945. Our first meeting were held in the Lutheran Service Center on Lunalilo Street, with Pastor Adolph Meyer as our first called pastor. In 1946, church property was purchased with the construction of the church building completed in 1950. We have been in the same location since then.
From its beginning, Our Redeemer has had a growing interest in Christian education of children and youth. In 1949, a Kindergarten through Grade 2 school was established. This grew K to Grade 6 in 1958 and by 1971 the decision was made to add a high school. In 1963, property for the parking lot was purchased and two years later the auditorium and additional classrooms were constructed. As enrollment increased it became necessary to lease additional space at the United Methodist Church. In 1977, the property on Wilder for the Lutheran Elementary School was purchased. Dedication of the school took place in 1983.
Our Redeemer has been blessed with pastors and lay persons who had both vision and the dedication to see changes made where necessary. Since 1967, both male and female members of the church are allowed to vote in congregational meetings. In 1982, women were allowed to hold offices and to chair boards except the President, Vice-President, and the Board of Deacons. In 1992, however, these restrictions were removed.
The 1945 "Lutheran Hymnal" was replaced in 1986 with "The Lutheran Worship", and in 1991 the "Lutheran Book of Worship" was adopted. Currently the order of service varies from Sunday to Sunday and is printed in the church bulletins.
In 2000 we established the time for Sunday service at 9 a.m. with Sunday School and Adult Bible Study at 10:30 a.m.
