Our Savior Lutheran Church History
A Brief History - Our Savior
Two one time schoolhouses have served the congregation of Our Savior. The first schoolhouse was built in 1869 for the Leighton District (in the town of Stiles). In 1939 it was moved to Lena and remodeled as a church of worship for the newly-founded congregation. The congregation was founded in 1938 under the Northern Wisconsin District Mission Board; Armin Engel was the first resident pastor. Other Pastors included Kurt Lederer, Clayton Krug, Herbert Walther, Wayne Schmit, Arlyn Schmeling, Victor Schultz, and Warren Steffenhagen (who served the congregation for thirty-one years). Currently, Ryan Landwehr is currently the Pastor of both Our Savior and St. Mark congregations.
Our Savior church burned to the ground and was a total loss in November of 1998. Over the following 9 months, the American Legion Hall, the second schoolhouse, in Lena became a meeting place for worship. Construction of a new church and worship hall was completed in September of 1999 with the help of Builders For Christ and church members. It was dedicated on November 14th, 1999.
A Brief History - St. Mark
St. Mark was founded in 1892. It became a part of the Wisconsin Synod in 1957 when it joined the tri-parish of St. Paul, Oconto Falls and Our Savior, Lena (which is now a dual parish, with Lena and Spruce sharing a pastor). The Pastor at that time was Arlyn Schmeling. Pastor Victor Schultz followed Pastor Schmeling, serving from 1960 to 1967. After a short five-month vacancy Pastor Warren R. Steffenhagen served the congregation until 1998. Pastor Ryan Landwehr currently serves the congregation.
The congregation celebrated its one-hundredth anniversary in a special service on June 21, 1992. By God's grace the congregation has a close family-like relationship committed to the work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
