Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Penobscot Valley Church of Christ History

In the 1950s a church of Christ was organized in Bangor, Maine. They began regular meetings in a building on Union St., near downtown. The church continued strong into the 1970s when it was introduced to teachings and practices commonly associated with the non-institutional churches of Christ. Naturally, differences emerged and several left the congregation over matters of conviction for what the Bible teaches.

Leadership

By the mid-70s these Christians began to fellowship and worship as the Brewer Church of Christ (Brewer is just across the Penobscot River from Bangor). Since that time it has been ministered to by various men, including Herb Morang (now of Bolivar, TN), Duane VanRheenan (Malibu, TX), and others. In the 1990s we had only one man minister to us (1992 - 1994). Unfortunately, little progress was made during his tenure with us. He chose to leave in the autumn of 1994. Since that time, various men who have belonged to our congregation have provided teaching, preaching, and some guidance. Most of these men have moved away, while a few others have chosen to leave our congregation. No man has ever served as an elder in our congregation. Presently, we simply do not have qualified men who can rise to this responsibility.

Land

In the early 1980's we purchased 3+ acres of land in neighboring Brewer. The property is located in an ideal area: in the midst of several neighborhoods and adjacent to a major road leading into Brewer (and Bangor). Not long after we secured the land, a congregation in Columbus, OH, provided the funds needed to pay off the land. While this has been a tremendous blessing, we have not had the financial resources to construct adequate and appropriate facilities here. We hope that will change in the near future as we grow.

Initiatives

In early 1998 central Maine was dealt a serious blow from a severe ice storm. As recovery efforts continued, we were able to provide food boxes, care of Disaster Relief International (Nashville, TN), to nearly 500 families. In September of 1997 and 1998 we organized "Bring A Friend Month" in an effort to encourage our members into a habit of bringing guests, and to target our guests with basic messages at their level. Throughout 1998 we campaigned to recruit people to relocate to Bangor to help the church. This effort, however, was unfruitful despite our diligent efforts.

2000 - 2002

Our congregation moved from meeting in the old grange hall in Bangor to a rented house outside of town, in Hudson (see photo). In early 2003 we were able to begin renting Komisky Auditorium on the campus of Husson College in Bangor, bringing our meetings closer to town.

2003 into 2004

In March of 2003 John and Debbie Bair joined us from South Carolina. As our first full-time minister in nearly a decade John eagerly and enthusiastically began working with the congregation in numerous ways, leading a number of individuals both in the community and in the congregation to Christ. After a year of service, however, John and Debbie decided in May 2004 to return to the Carolinas to tend to family matters requiring their ongoing presence there. John continues in ministry, serving as a family life minister for a congregation in North Carolina.
