Poultney United Methodist Church History
Church History
The Greek Revival structure was built as the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1841. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places wherein it states the "church has a meeting house form to which was added a monumental portico and Wren-inspired, two tier central tower. An elaborate weather vane sits atop the domed roof."
A Brief History of the Poultney Methodist Church
The history of our church dates back to the late 1700’s. Our early parishioners were served by circuit preachers.
1786- The Poultney Methodist Church was founded as the Methodist Society with the pulpit supplied by a circuit rider. By 1801 they had 21 members.
1801-21 members were recorded
1822-The Masonic Temple, first known as the “Stone Church, was built.
1832-Poultney put into the Troy Conference
1822-1841-The Poultney Methodist Church met at the Stone Church
1840-1842-The Poultney Methodist Church of today was built and dedicated. The Troy Academy (now Green Mountain College) contributed $600 towards it.
The church was built in what was then known as West Poultney to be closer to the Troy Academy.
1857-1858-church was frescoed, inside blinds added and the ground in front terraced and graded
1866-1868-the basement was reconstructed and the house repainted
1872-1874-the roof was slated, an orchestra built and an elegant organ purchased
Early 1900’s-1921-front portico added, the stained glass windows installed, and a pipe organ
1949-1953-capital campaign to raise funds for a major church renovation-first renovations since the church was built in 1841 except for the windows and organ in 1921
