Riverlea Church of Christ History
The Church of Christ having been established on the day of Pentecost as described in Acts 2 has its foundation in Christ Jesus. Its headquarters are in Heaven and its origin and destiny are with God.
A non-denominational Church.
The Church of Christ Riverlea started at the home of the late Maria Hendricks (Grand-mother to the Hendricks and Bradford families) pre 1950, and was planted in Newclare at 63 Griffith Road Pre 1960, under the direction of Brother Lovett and his family who were missionaries from the United States and Br. Clements Bradford. The Lovett family supported the Church until their departure to the USA. 5 families remained serving the Lord, namely the Bradford, Roro, Hendricks, Makube and Kisten families pre and post 1960.
In 1963 the Bradford & Hendricks families relocated to Riverlea on the western outskirts of Johannesburg, where the Church of Christ Riverlea was then established and continued serving the Lord at the residence of Br. Clements Bradford & family at 43 Lomala Street, Riverlea for several years. The Church continued to grow, adding to the existing 5 families until eventually the Church grew to a size no longer suitable to the residence of Br. Clements Bradford, and moved to a classroom at the local Primary school in Riverlea in 1971 where Church servies convened every Sunday for many years without fail until the current worship facility at Gazania Road was built.
Sincere recognition is given to the late Br David and Sis Edith Harris, who left it in their last will and testament that the proceeds of the sale of their home upon their passing, would go towards the building of the Church worship facility built in the early 1990’s. Recognition is also given to the Mayfair Church of Christ in the United States, whose generosity constituted the larger part of the contribution that made the current worship facility in Gazania Road possible.
We remember all our beloved Brothers and Sisters who have worshipped with us and have since passed on as follows:
Brothers: David, Clements, Roro, Makube, Kisten, Shakes and Reggie.
Sisters: Ouma Nellie, Davis, Barends, Sarah, Gussy, Shirley, Emireen, Drucilla, Rose, Meisie, Mary, Joanne and Gladys.
We recognize the following Brothers in Christ and their families: George Thompson, Vincent Naidoo, Edward (Bill) Carvell, the Davis family, Faried Ali, Andrew (Addo), Willem, Xavier, Brandon, Shane, Cecil in their service to our Lord and for the Church for so many years.
We always thank God. The father of our Lord Jesus Christ. When we think of you because we knew of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have shown us. Derived Col 1:3-5
I thank my God every time I remember you in all my prayers for all of you. I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the Gospel from the first day until now. Derived Phil 1:3-5
