Sacred Heart Parish History
Prior to 1865, Roman Catholic services were held in Michael O’Neill’s house, near the site of the CIBC’s present location.
The first Mass was held at the new church named ‘The Sacred Heart of Jesus” on February 3rd, 1865.
The total cost for the new church and furnishings was $2,000.
The church bell was successfully purchased by Rev. Luke Allain in 1883 with financial help from all denominations in Uxbridge under the promise to ring it 3 times a day. A task done previously by the Fire Hall but that bell was destroyed in a fire.
Between 1886 -1950, 25 Roman Catholic priests served the needs of the church. After 1950, the Sacred Heart priests began their work in the church.
The CWL was established under the direction of Rev. John Karskens in April 1953.
Rev. Andrew Marynen became pastor in 1959 and initiated the building of the new church.
Because the church was demolished so the current church could be built on the same site, services were held in the chapel at St. John Training School from August 1963 until May 1964.
The first Mass in the new church building was on June 5, 1964 led by Rev. Andrew Marynen and the solemn blessing took place on Sunday July 26, 1964 at 4:00 with the most Rev. Archbishop Pocock.
Various improvements and changes have occurred over the years by talented and dedicated parishioners giving their time and efforts to add to the beauty and devotion in the church. One of them was the Grotto dedicated to Mary which is located on the front lawn of the church.
