Saint Demetrios Christian Greek Orthodox Church History
History of the Greek Community in Hawke's Bay in New Zealand
Soon after 1930 the first Orthodox Christian Greeks arrived in Hawke's Bay. Orthodoxy flourished in the Hawke's Bay between 1950-1960, but we did not have a church , or even a hall to gather together and keep in touch with each other. We thank St. Mathew Anglican Church in Hastings who made their church available for our services.
It took 80 years, but now we finally have a beautiful church to gather, meet and pray in. We thank His Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew, especially we thank our Archibishop Amphilohius who worked very hard to put everthing together and finalise the work on the church, and many thanks to all donors.
We the Orthodox Christians endeavor to look after our new church, and try to make her look even better.
Father Joachim Raptopoulos
