Saint Mair and Our Lady Help of Christians History
A small Catholic community was first formed in the late 1920s and some rooms were rented in a house near to Machynlleth Railway Station. This served as the principal place of worship until a former disused garage was purchased by a donor. Here a small chapel was constructed and for the next ten years or so Mass was celebrated. In 1939 the Redemptorists came to the area at the request of Menevia Diocese. Maengwyn House was purchased and before long a small chapel had been constructed inside the building. Within a short time, a chapel was constructed in the grounds and this served as a Mass-centre. The present building was financed by an anonymous donor and was consecrated in 1965. It was claimed [at the time] that this was the first Catholic church building which reflected the liturgical changes brought about by Vatican 2.
