Smalley Baptist Church History
Church History
This Place of Worship was founded in 1785, and we understand it is still open.
Smalley Baptist Church is a rectangular building of brick, with a hipped roof, looking quite new, but Kelly's Directory of 1932 says it was founded in 1785 and then had 300 sittings. The account in Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Derbyshire (1986) says it was built in 1790, and linked with Ilkeston until 1822. Refurbishments include enlarging to the front, and heightening in 1817. The side and rear walls of the original building remain (33¼ft by 24¼ft externally) with one wide segmental-arched window at each side, and two altered windows at the rear. The front has a central doorway, above which is a cross, and two tiers of windows, and there is a small extension to the left side.
There is a large burial ground, with (amongst others) monuments to Elizabeth, wife of Christopher Harrison (1796); William Carrington (1833) et al.; Elizabeth Woolley (1807); Ann wife of William Kerry (1838); Joseph Harrison (1825); Anthony Weston (1836); Thomas and John Shaw (1828); Elizabeth Beeson (1844); John Smith (1820), his wife Mary (1813) and his widow Sarah (1845); and Joseph Fletcher (1826)
