Somerton United Methodist Church History
Welcome to Somerton United Methodist Church, a vibrant and welcoming community of faith nestled in the heart of Northeast Philadelphia. Our roots run deep, having been founded as Somerton Methodist-Episcopal Church in 1834 by John Edwards, who began preaching in the then-town of Somerton. From 1834-1836, our congregation met in a local school before constructing our first sanctuary in 1836 on the current site where we continue to worship and serve.
For nearly two centuries, Somerton UMC has been a beacon of hope, love, and service to our community, striving to share the message of Christ’s love with all. We are proud of our rich history, and our eyes are firmly set on the future as we seek to make a difference in the lives of those around us.
Today, we offer a blended worship experience, combining traditional hymns and contemporary praise music to engage and inspire our diverse congregation. We also provide weekly online Bible studies to deepen our faith and understanding of God’s Word.
In addition to our worship services and educational offerings, we are committed to giving back to our local and global communities. We actively participate in the Somerton Interfaith Food Bank, helping to provide nourishment to those in need. Internationally, we fund the Liberian Education Initiative, proudly contributing to the construction of a school in Liberia to empower and uplift communities through education.
Recognizing the importance of healing and recovery, our doors are open throughout the week to various addiction recovery groups, providing a safe and supportive space for individuals seeking a new beginning.
At Somerton United Methodist Church, our mission is to spread God’s love and serve our neighbors, both near and far. We invite you to join us on this journey of faith and fellowship, as we seek to make a lasting impact in our community and beyond. Welcome home!
