Who we are
St. Andrew’s Parish is a unique - diverse community of people who live and share life through trusting, loving and serving.
Our community is already gifted, enriched by many cultures and voices on a Mission to listen to the needs of others with an attitude of openness and acceptance for a deeper understanding and cooperation.
In our journey of life and faith, we will work and strive to build a more peaceful and better society for a greater future. We like to share our talents by developing and maintaining a parish community that is active, vibrant and spiritually strong.
We look forward to preserving our faith traditions, reaching out to others as the living Body of Christ in this changing world. With your participation let’s go on to finish the work we are in.

St. Andrews Roman Catholic Church History
Welcome to the historic St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, the first Roman Catholic Church to be built in the northern part of Thunder Bay. For many years the parish has played a major role in the development and growth of the Catholic Faith in Northwestern Ontario.
The first Church, at the corner of Red River Road and Algoma Street, was dedicated under the patronage of St. Andrew in 1875. Its first parish priest was Fr. Richard Baxter, S.J. In 1881 a new Church had to be built to replace the original which had been destroyed by fire.
In 1920, the second St. Andrew’s Church was moved to its present site and now operates as the Dew Drop Inn Soup Kitchen.
The parish served as the headquarters and home base of Jesuit missionary activity in the region for many years. It became the headquarters for the Jesuits, after the first of such headquarters in the region, The Fort William Mission, just south of present day Thunder Bay, ended its operations in 1906. St. Andrew’s missionaries served as chaplains to the Canadian Pacific Railway workers and their families along the northern shore of Lake Superior.
The Jesuits served St. Andrew’s Church until 1999, when the parish had its first diocesan priest, Rev. Father Scott Gale.
Through the experiences of Jesuit missionaries passing through St. Andrew’s rectory, the parish was, and would continue to be, exposed to a regional perspective on the development of Roman Catholicism in North Western Ontario.
