Who we are
Located on Ducharme Street since 1984, St. Antoine Le Grand Monastery resides within a 1930s school building, which once housed Outremont's first synagogue. The monastery is a slightly weathered establishment, one of 83 worldwide owned by the Maronite Lebanese Order and the sole representative in North America. Known as Dayrna, meaning "my monastery" in Arabic, the site attracts Christian believers, primarily from Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Iraq, and the Middle East.
Drawing around 2,500 attendees, half of whom are under 25, the monastery hosts various activities and masses in Arabic and Aramaic, with translations in French.
Assisted by four monks, the monastery's spiritual team serves as guides.
The monastery's gem is undoubtedly the Sanctuary of the Saints, completed in 2015 with full funding from a devotee. Constructed with over 33 tons of Lebanese limestone, the sanctuary houses images of Maronite saints and replicas of their tombs behind glass doors, symbolizing spiritual devotion.
Spanning four floors, the monastery houses administrative offices, a daycare, numerous rooms, a chapel, and a church. The main lounge features an open safe containing only archival documents. Embracing simplicity, the Maronite Lebanese Order encourages minimalistic decor, with library books given to the faithful instead of gathering dust.
Preserving historical elements, Stars of David from the time of Jewish Hassidic occupancy and synagogue-era seating arrangements can still be found. The altar and rear wall have adapted for the new faith, adorned with a mosaic.
Outside, a recently changed cedar Canadian cross, illuminated by remote-controlled LED lights, reflects the monastery's adaptability to change.
