Who we are

LIFE OF ST. ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY:

Early Life:
At her early age, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary as a little princess was deeply religious. She prayed fervently. She was willing to share her toys with less fortunate children. At the age of four, she was betrothed to Ludwig of Thuringia (a Duke) and was sent to live in his family’s castle to learn their way of life. They married when Elizabeth was 14 (in 1221), and they lived a short happy married life.

A life making a difference in the world:
After the birth of her first child (1223), Elizabeth built an orphanage. With the birth of second child, she founded a hospital where she took care of the patients. When there was famine and pestilence in the area, she opened the castle’s food pantries to feed the hungry and the poor.

Challenges:
She was treated unkindly for profoundly practising her faith at her young age. Her suffering was aggravated when at the age of six, her mother died. Ludwig’s relatives did not look favourably on her when she reached out to the poor and the hungry, although Ludwig greatly approved Elizabeth’s actions of generosity. Ludwig died in 1227 and Elizabeth had to suffer severe hardship. The difficulties only strengthened her fervent love of God and love for the needy people around her.

Life of miracles:
One day when Elizabeth placed a dying leper on their bed, Ludwig instead of a leper, saw the figure of the crucified Christ stretched out upon the bed.
Once when Elizabeth was giving away food from the pantry, as Elizabeth was carrying loves of bread in her basket, Ludwig asked what was in the basket. She told him that she was carrying the roses and invited him to come and see. He could not believe this as it was a winter and there couldn’t be roses. So, he went and looked into her basket and he really found the basket filled with red and white roses. This was hard even for Elizabeth to find that instead of bread, the basket was filled with roses. There are so many other miracles known of her life.

Death and spiritual legacy:
She died at the age of 24 on November 17, 1231. She was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1235 (even before four years of her death). She is known as the patron saint of bakers, beggars, brides, charities, homeless people, hospitals, windows and lots more.
There are so many interesting life stories that we have of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary apart from the few flashes we read in the above section. May learning her life of few years inspire us to live a life truly devoted to God and to the needy around us.
When we truly have the will and desire to meet God in all things and in all people, our riches too can help us reach heaven.
