St. Florence Mission, Thunder Bay Beach History

In 1943 George McNamara donated the land and built the Thunder Bay Beach chapel. Opened on July 2, 1943, it was associated with Ste. Croix in Lafontaine. This white frame building served a dual purpose. During the summer it was used as a place of worship, and for the remainder of the year it was a public school (S.S .#24). The school closed in 1967 and St. Florence has been used as a chapel all year round. A ball-park and other recreational facilities border the church property, courtesy of the McNamara family.
