Mission Statement
As a Canadian licensed charity, and under the Leadership of the Syriac Patriarchate and the Canadian Archdiocese, St. John is committed to its core mission and that is to work for the Glory of God and the Salvation of its members based on the teachings of the Bible and our Apostles’ interpretations which have been preserved and carried over and handed down since the inception of Christianity. Our goal is to achieve Salvation through faith, deeds, humbleness and prayers.
The history of St.John begins with the first milestone laid when the believers of the Syriac community of Burlington felt a dire need to establish a church to worship and Glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. The believers joined forces and shortly after and headed by Malfono Shammas Hanna Abdel-Ahad Saliba, the would be congregation started to meet in private houses to recite and practice the Mass and the Hymns of the Syriac Orthodox rite. This determined practice continued for the next three years between 2003 and 2006.
The Head of the Archdioces of Canada, then Archbishop Mor Timotheos Aphrem Aboodi, came to visit his young congregation!! The second milestone occurred when the said Archbishop felt a sense of determination, truthfulness, and well Suryoyo deep rooted faithfull congregation. He blessed the step and obtained the blessings of our beloved Patriarch, His holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas and blessed the establishment of St. John’s church. A letter was drafted to the Archbishop of the Ukrainian community in Canada to allow the faithful to use their Church which is located on Pearl st., Burlington.
The Third milestone took place when the Ukrainian Archdioces and the local priest acting on their Christian principles, approved the unusual request (being from a different denomination). On March 12/2006, the Archbishop, distinguished guests, visitors and the entire congregation of St. John celebrated their first Mass, see pictures and details within this Website. We cannot express in words our deep appreciation to our brothers and sisters of St. Mary’s Ukrainian church of Burlington.
Saint John have come a long way since then, there were many accomplishments that left a long lasting mark in our church’s young history. To name a few, The congregation is growing stronger in faith and Bible education. Our Board of Trustees represented the church from year one at the “Annual North America Conventionin”, see details within this site. And just a few weeks ago, Our beloved Archbishop Mor Athanasiuos Elia Bahi ordained nine young men and adults as Deacons and 15 Ladies as Deaconesses. See full story within this site.
Two Bishops and several distinguished Reverands celebrated mass amongst their people in this beautiful church. Many possitive comments and encouragments followed after each mass. There are many short and long term activities planned for this young church but above all, the church is gaining financial strength in order to have a full time priest, a spiritual leader, which we believe would be the corner stone for our church to flourish more. We, at St. John, sense joy, love and feel the Hands of God wrapped around us.
Thank you God.
