Who we are
At St. John’s, we strive to be a vibrant presence in downtown Kitchener where diverse people are welcomed into a loving community, that worships God, is growing in faith, and serves others in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
We are an Anglican Church
Part of the Anglican Diocese of Huron with more than 200 churches stretching from Windsor to Port Rowan to Tobermory in Ontario.
Part of the Anglican Church of Canada
Our History
St John’s has deep roots in the community. The parish was founded in 1856.
In 1861 property was purchased at the southeast corner of Water Street North and Duke Street in Kitchener, still the location of St. John’s. The first church was erected on this site in 1862.
Over time the building became too small for the growing congregation. The decision was made to demolish the first building and build a larger church.
On Sunday, October 7, 1894, the new building, designed by Toronto architect Eden Smith, who was a proponent of the “Arts and Crafts” movement in Victorian architecture, was opened and dedicated, and has been expanded and renovated several times since then.
