Who we are
All Welcome!
St John’s is a large building with room for everyone. We especially welcome children of all ages. Sunday School takes place during the 10am Mass in the Children's Room at the back of the Church. For those too young for this, a Crèche area with toys is provided allowing parents to attend to their needs and participate in the service free from the concern that they may be disturbing others.
St John's is committed to keep safe and protect from harm any child or adult who may be vulnerable. If you need to discuss any concerns in confidence, please approach Rachel Rae or Rebecca Hall (our Safeguarding Officers) or Fr. John or Fr. Andrew. Alternatively you can email safeguarding@stjohn-uppernorwood.org.uk. All conversations will be treated seriously and sensitively.
For the less mobile, there are a few steps up to the main entrance but there is wheelchair access round the side through the North Door. Once inside, the main areas are fully accessible. The sound system has a hearing aid loop and large print hymn books and service sheets are available. Coffee, tea and other refreshments are available after the Sunday Mass and we hope that people will stay to meet other members of the congregation and explore the building at their leisure.

Children and Youth Activities
Under 12s:
Our Sunday School is held during the 10am Mass. Children join the group at the start of Mass and return into the service at the Offertory to be a part of our Communion.
We have a team of Sunday School leaders, led by Jacqueline Stewart; two leaders take the group each week. The team plans storytelling and craft activities for each week based on a chosen theme.
Several times in the year the children share their learning with the congregation towards the end of the service.
On major Feast Days we encourage the children to take a bigger part in our services – for example processions for Palm Sunday and Epiphany, and a Nativity play on Christmas morning.

Under 18s:
St John’s Youth Group, for those aged between 10 and 18, meets on Sunday afternoons. They enjoy a wide range of activities including Bible studies, a BBQ, activities themed around climate change and lots of games.
In the 2009 Open Week the group had a stall to raise awareness of the issues surrounding climate change, and collected origami boat petitions to send to the Prime Minister as part of the Operation Noah’s Ark campaign. Last year they also went to Wintershall to watch a performance of the Life of Christ and visited Croydon Police Station for an Open Day.
We have recently started a monthly Bible study class during the 10am Sunday Mass – another opportunity for young people to meet, learn and make friendships, especially for those who can’t make the 4pm meetings.
This summer the group is hoping to go to youth camp. However, we need to increase funds by around £700 to make this happen. Our young people are set to meet this challenge through sponsored events, jumble sales and car cleaning after Mass on Sunday. Do help support them as much as possible.
