St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Community History
In the spring of 1981, five Exeter families, together with Father Gerry, Sister Antoinette, and four handicapped residents celebrated the first Mass in the farmhouse at 84 Exeter Road. Soon after, more families joined and created the need for a larger worship area. What would happen next would define this small community of faith for years to come.
The parish was dedicated to Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha because of her Indian heritage and the strong Indian connections in South County.
The Kateri church family, young and old, began to clean and refurbish the garage area on the property to establish a place of worship, a place all their own, a place made possible by the effort and determination of a small group of believers.
In 2003, when the parish had grown to 100 families, the community made their leap of faith and believed that they could build a larger church worthy of the glory of the Lord. The task was accomplished over a period of three years; all money and time donated by the Kateri parishioners. As Blessed Kateri is the patroness of the Environment and Ecology, the new church is home to many recycled items such as the pews and stained glass windows.
In 2007 we reached our 25th anniversary. A special Mass was celebrated by Bishop Thomas Tobin and Father Gerry.
Today’s parish, still under the guidance of Monsignor Gerry and Sister Antoinette, along with our devotion to Saint Kateri, continues to thrive and serve the needs of parishioners and those of the surrounding community.
