Who we are
The Maronite Eparchy of Saint Maron of Montreal, also known in Latin as Eparchia Sancti Maronis Marianopolitana Maronitarum, represents a distinct ecclesiastical territory or eparchy within the Catholic Church in Canada. As of 2014, it boasted a baptized population of 87,900, and it is currently under the leadership of Eparch Paul Marwan Tabet.
Geographically centered in MontrГ©al, Quebec, the eparchy's seat is at the Saint-Maron Cathedral. Its jurisdiction encompasses all Maronite Catholic adherents of the Maronite Church across Canada, and it operates independently under the direct authority of the Holy See in Rome, without affiliation to any ecclesiastical province. The eparchy consists of 17 parishes and, in 2014, counted 87,900 Lebanese Maronite Catholics within its bounds.
Established on August 27, 1982, by Pope John Paul II, the eparchy filled a void in territory previously lacking an Ordinary for the particular church sui iuris. The majority of Maronite faithful in the eparchy migrated to Canada during significant immigration waves between 1860 and 1914, 1930 and 1960, 1970 and 1980, as well as 1989 and 1991. These immigrants brought with them a vibrant culture and maintained their religious identity within a predominantly agnostic Canadian society that had once been predominantly Christian.
