Who we are

The Parish of Chelsea-Lascelles-Wakefield was formed in 1990 and is a part of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa in the Anglican Church of Canada. We are a welcoming Christian community, nurturing life's balance in God's changing world.

St Mary Magdalene, Chelsea had been part of the Parish of Hull with sister congregations at St George’s, Gatineau and St James, Hull. Chelsea was a growing municipality and St Mary Magdalene had enjoyed the fruits of this growth. At a Vestry meeting in September 2000, the congregation voted to expand its building in order to enhance its mission within the community.

Church of the Good Shepherd, Wakefield and Holy Trinity, Lascelles had been sister congregations since their inceptions in the 1860’s. In January of 2000; however, it was the will of these congregations to deepen their shared life and at successive Vestry meetings they voted to amalgamate into one congregation.

Church of the Good Shepherd now serves as the sponsoring Church of the congregation and holds services every Sunday morning. Holy Trinity is now a Chapel and continues to flourish as a place for special services of worship such as Evensong in the summer, the Feast of St Francis, and Christmas Eve Easter morning celebrations. What follows is a historical sketch of each of the congregations that have come to form the Parish of Chelsea-Lascelles-Wakefield.

Friday Taizé Services

5 Pritchard Road

Taizé is an ecumenical monastic order based in Burgundy, France. It originated in the late 1920's and now comprises more than a hundred members, brothers from Catholic and Protestant traditions, originating from about thirty countries across the world. Taizé is a place of pilgrimage. It especially attracts young adults. In Taizé worship, there is no preaching, no teaching, no talk of sin or repentance or forgiveness. There is just this elegantly simple service: short chants, often in Latin, repeated over and over in the dark. Plus some short Scripture readings or psalms. And silence, at least 8 or 10 minutes, sometimes more. In 45 minutes, it's over. One Taizé brother has said: 'It is a time to rest in God, to let the words listened to and sung penetrate one's being'.

Frequency to be determined - see the calendar for details

QUAIL

QUAIL is a nonprofit charitable association that cares for adults with developmental disabilities.

QUAIL operates a home in Chelsea, Quebec for five residents, who need assistance with the tasks of daily living. Their goal is to provide our residents a home and support for life, or as long as we can support their needs.

They also offer short-term respite services for adults with developmental disabilities.

Fund raising is essential for their continued care of their residents. They accept charitable donations from the public and put on a number of fund raising events throughout the year: the Strawberry Social, Family Fun Day, BBQ, Dinner at L'Orée du Bois, and the Christmas Craft Fair at Chelsea Elementary School.

And they also sell jams, jellies, chutneys and pickles at various events in the community (in the Gatineau Hills) and weekly at the Wakefield market and yearly at the Vorlage Craft Fair.

Centre 454 provides drop-in support services and social recreational activities for individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We offer a wide range of services to assist homeless men, women and their children to transform their lives with respect and dignity. Since 1954, Centre 454 has been working closely with the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, the municipal, provincial and federal governments, local businesses, community and church groups, donors and volunteers. Although Centre 454 provides support to an increasing number of people, the demand far outweighs the support available. Without Centre 454, many would be spending their days on the street or in very unsafe conditions.

The Well/La Source

The Well / La Source is a spiritual and justice based gathering place for women and women with children. We provide a safe, supportive, inclusive environment where women come together to empower each other while nourishing the whole person.

Cornerstone

Cornerstone provides emergency shelter and supportive housing for homeless women in Ottawa.

Since 1983, Cornerstone has been working closely with the municipal, provincial and federal governments, local businesses, community and church groups, donors and volunteers. We offer a wide range of services to assist homeless women to seek healing and new opportunities.

Although almost 1500 women become homeless in Ottawa each year, Cornerstone can only help approximately 500 women due to shortage of space. Without Cornerstone, many would be living on the street or in very unsafe living conditions.

St Mary Magdalene History

Services in Chelsea, as an outstation of Hull, began in the 1830’s in settlers’ homes. By 1842, services were being held in the Chelsea schoolhouse. In 1875, the building of St. Mary Magdalene Church, Chelsea was begun. The church was dedicated two years later. In the fall of 1943, the first St. Mary Magdalene Church was secularized and the building demolished. The small congregation continued with worship services held in the schoolhouse. From 1950-1956, the growing congregation of St. Mary Magdalene met in the United Church in Chelsea. New land was acquired and, in 1957, the cornerstone for the new church was laid by Bishop John H. Dixon of Montreal. On December 7, 1966 the second St. Mary Magdalene, Chelsea was consecrated
