St. Mary of the Epiphany Mission History

History of the Catholic Church in Timpson, Texas

Timpson's, a small town in Northeast Texas. Its' residents were predominantly protestant. The Catholics who lived in Timpson were in the minority of the town's population. They longed for a church of their faith. Meanwhile, they met in private homes to profess their faith. Some would drive many miles to the nearest Catholic church to attend mass.

After years of absence of a Catholic church in Timpson, several faithful gathered to study all the possibilities, and the means for obtaining a place of their own to worship. Months of exhaustive meetings and prayers resulted in unrealized dreams for a church.

Bishop Carmody of the Diocese of Tyler was contacted to plead their cause and to request his presence at a meeting in a private home with the Catholics of Timpson. After listening to everyone present, Bishop Carmody quoted "You Catholics of Timpson need a church".

The Epiphany Catholic Mission accepted the use of First United Methodist Church until such time when their church could be constructed.

The Epiphany Catholic Mission celebrated its first mass in Timpson on January 6, 1996 at 5pm. A conciliation by Bishop Carmody and Rev. Father Devaraj Arulappa of St. Therese Catholic Church of Center, Texas. A festive dinner followed.

In the spring of 1998, the Epiphany Catholic Mission received word that a home on Highway 59 South was up for sale and might serve the purpose of their mission. Father Devaraj, Charles Dalen, and Ed Konderla wasted no time in purchasing the property.

On the day of the closing, Father Devaraj asked that all of the members meet the next morning at our soon to be church. Everyone came. A prayer of thanks was offered and then on to the business of coordinating all of our ideas, suggestions, and talents. The work began.

Though there was much work to be done, Father Devaraj chose Palm Sunday, April 3, 1998 for the first celebration of mass in our new church. The awesome rite was celebrated by Bishop Carmody and Father Devaraj.
